Humans have 5 senses: Seeing, Hearing, Touching, Smelling, Tasting. Sight tends to help makes sense of the other senses that we are using, so it is generally regarded as the most important sense, but today we want to talk about touch.

In this final installment of the Jesus Unhinged series we are going to see how Jesus’ touch gave life, restored life, brought life to the lonely and the isolated and surprised the people around him about what his touch can do.

Jesus was busy doing ministry with a giant crowd around him when a religious leader came to him and asked him to come to his house and touch his sick 12 year-old daughter to heal her. He had faith that if Jesus touched her, she would be healed.  Jesus agreed to go with him, but they are interrupted by a woman. This woman had been bleeding for 12 years and had tried everything, with lots of doctors to try and stop the bleeding and spent all she had. She had faith that if she touched Jesus, she would be healed.

In her culture, bleeding made one unclean, and if a bleeding person touched someone else, they would then make that person also unclean.  So for her to have the boldness to join a crowd and try to touch Jesus was unhinged because of all the people she could potentially make unclean.

As soon as she touched him, she was healed and he felt the power leave his body.  But the following exchanged Jesus had with her is very interesting. He looked for her and made her face him.  She squares up to him and tell him the whole truth – Jesus then blesses her and moves on. 

The interesting thing is that she received her healing immediately, but she didn’t gain the blessing until she faced him and told him the whole truth. 

Have you ever told Jesus the whole truth?

Have you ever told Jesus all the things you’ve tried besides him?

Have you ever told Jesus all the things you’ve spent your money on?

Have you ever told Jesus how you were out of line?

Jesus already knows everything anyway…She got the miracle, but she didn’t get the blessing until she told the whole truth. Cleansing of her body and her spirit, her mind, her soul.

He tells her to go in peace and be freed from suffering. There was more to her suffering than the physical.

I’m willing to bet there is more to your pain than just physical pain. You live with the emotional pain of the things that you’ve done and the things that have happened to you. 

She reached out and touched Jesus and that touch made her clean, it didn’t make him unclean.

After this, Jesus moves on with the first guy to find his 12 year old daughter at home, who had just recently passed away.   Jesus informs the family that she is not dead she is merely asleep.

He took his top 3 guys in there with him, showing them the ropes. Then he gives his full attentions to the 12 year-old girl. Here’s Mark 5:41-42⁴¹ He took her by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum!” (which means “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”).

⁴² Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished. 

Jesus’ touch healed the young 12 year old girl. Touch Jesus healed the woman of 12 years of suffering.   

Life changes when we experience a touch of Jesus. 

In fact, it might make you come unhinged. 

Think about in what way you are responded to an invitation to come unhinged with Jesus so you can come along side where Jesus is already working, already moving and join him there.
